Younis Mahmoud

Yunis Mahmud Khalifa (Arabic يونس محمود خلف, DMG Yūnis Mahmoud Halif, according to the English transliteration Younis Mahmoud Khalef; born March 2, 1983 in Kirkuk ) is an Iraqi football player. He is currently in the first division Qatari Al- Wakrah SC under contract.

Mahmud started his career with ad Dibs Electric and then moved to the then third division ad - Dibs, before moving to second division side FC Kirkuk in 1999. He had 19 goals with large amount of Kirkuk's promotion to the Iraqi Super League. In 2001 he moved to Baghdad giants at- Talaba and from there to al - Wahda in the UAE. Another stop was Al -Khor Sports Club in Qatar, where he was able to achieve 30 goals in 51 games.

In summer 2006, Mahmud signed a two -year contract with Al- Gharafa. The transfer fee was not disclosed, but Mahmoud is officially the most expensive of Iraqi players and most expensive players in the Arab region in the Qatari league. In the 2006/07 season he was top scorer in Qatar.

In the Iraqi national Mahmud has played 75 times ( the first time on July 19, 2002) and scored 29 goals. He also belonged to the Iraqi squad at the Olympic Games in 2004, where he scored in the match against Portugal the intermediate 3:2 for Iraq (final score 4:2 ). In the Asia Cup in 2004, he managed a hit.

In the finals of the Asian Cup 2007 he struck with his team the three -time Asian champions Saudi Arabia in Jakarta 1-0. As captain of the team, he scored the winning goal with a header in the 71st minute. He was also elected scorer and best player of the tournament.

Other successes Mahmud are winning the West Asian Championship in 2002, the West Asian Games in 2005 and the silver medal at the Asian Games 2006.
