2006 Asian Games

The 15th Asian Games were held from December 1 to 15, 2006 in Doha instead. Doha was the first city in Arabia, and to Tehran in 1974, only the second in West Asia, which served as the venue for Asian Games. For the first time took more than 10,500 athletes from 45 nations took part, and in 39 sports over 1,350 medals were awarded.

Organization of the Games

There were four candidates to host the Asian Games 2006 Doha ( Qatar), Hong Kong (China), Kuala Lumpur ( Malaysia) and New Delhi ( India). On 12 November 2000, the election took place in Busan, the host of the Asian Games 2002. Were entitled to vote, all 41 members of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA ). The selection consisted of a maximum of three ballots (excluding runoff ). If in any ballot no absolute majority for one candidate was certain, was thrown out of the last and it was further selected. In the first ballot, New Delhi received only two votes and was eliminated. In the second round there was already an absolute majority for Doha by 22 votes, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong received 13 votes 6.

Medal Tally

China was 165 gold and a total of 316 medals clearly the most successful nation. The result of the last Games in 2002 could thus exceeded, but the own record of 183 gold medals at the Asian Games in 1990 could not be reached. The second best nation was South Korea, but less than 100 gold medals won. A total of 38 nations won medals and thus perpetuate the medal.

Participating nations

At the Asian Games 2006, all 45 OCA members participated. The largest delegation presented South Korea with 656 athletes, closely followed by China with 647 The smallest was the team of Brunei with only seven participants.
