However, it is not the first line of its kind in Japan, only 14 years earlier, was opened in Kobe port liner in 1981. The distance is about 14.7 km.

History

Before its opening in 1995 it has been variously feared the Yurikamome could develop into a multi- billion - yen boondoggle. As the artificial island of Odaiba, which they operated, the Yurikamome was planned and built well before the collapse of the Japanese bubble economy. A few months after its opening, the daily ridership moving to the 27,000 passengers, only slightly less than forecast in the run-up to 29,000 passengers, but still much less than the 80,000 passengers per day, which are needed in order to permanently can be profitable.

In 1996, however, the city government of Tokyo changed its strategy for Odaiba, allowed both addition to the existing focus on residential and commercial areas also entertainment on the island. This includes the establishment of a vacation resort right on the shore, as the other shoreline Tokyo is dominated by ports. Through this realignment, the passenger numbers doubled within a year to 60,000 passengers a day and could be increased in the following years.

However, the island popular but also the Yurikamome was not only by the new alignment Odaibas itself an attraction in itself, as these over large parts of the route offers a good view of the shore investments and Odaiba. A special feature of the route is the 270 ° loop on the west side of the Rainbow Bridge to reach the crossing over the bridge, the necessary height.

The fare is currently (July 2008) 180-370 yen.
