Yuzo Toyama

Yuzo Toyama (Japanese外 山 雄 三, Yuzo Toyama, born May 10, 1931 in Ushigome -ku, Tokyo ( today: Shinjuku, Tokyo ), Japan ) is a Japanese composer and conductor.

Biography

He studied composition, he graduated from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. In 1950 he was awarded second prize for chamber music Trois Pieces pour Caracteristiques Clarinet, Basson et Piano of the 20th Music Competition of Japan. In 1952 he graduated and gained experience as a conductor with the NHK Symphony Orchestra in which he was hired in 1956 as a full-time conductor. Immediately thereafter, he went to Vienna for two years and completed his conducting studies. During this time he also took part in master - classes with Erich Leinsdorf at the Salzburg Mozarteum.

During the world tour of the NHK Symphony Orchestra in 1960, he presented both his skills as a conductor and as a composer, because on the program was also his Rhapsody for Orchestra. Other orchestral Travel 1966 went through North and South America and Southeast Asia by 1979, all of which found a highly acclaimed recognition. Meanwhile, he had obtained recognition and so he was invited to Moscow in 1968 to conduct his Cello Concerto with soloist Mstislav Rostropovich. He has conducted leading Japanese orchestra that Osaka Philharmonic, Kyoto Symphony Orchestra (1967-1971) and Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra. Since 1989, he is next to his full-time employment with the NHK Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra. He is also a musical advisor to the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra. Numerous national and international awards and prizes were awarded to him.
