Zacharo

Zacharo (Greek Ζαχάρω ( f sg ) ) is a small town in the south of the Greek region Central Greece. Situated on the west coast of the Peloponnese, the Ionian Sea site has experienced rapid population growth since the 1980s. The community was recognized as a municipality ( dimos ) in 1947 and several times enlarged by incorporations, most recently in 2011, when the neighboring community Figalia came to Zacharo.

The place is also famous for its thermal springs at the lagoon of Kaiafas that were already known in antiquity. Sulfur sources were examined for the treatment of skin diseases, and arthritis. The tourist center is today but on the summer tourism along the sandy coastline.

Due to the devastating forest fires in August 2007 the site gained through regional awareness. Some villages in the town were completely destroyed, there were over 30 people lost their lives.

About three kilometers south Zacharos in Kakovatos were 1907 and 1908 by Wilhelm Dörpfeld the remains of three domed tombs explored and discovered an associated settlement from frühmykenischer time and partially excavated. From 2009-2011, more excavations of the settlement have been carried out by classical archaeologists from the University of Freiburg.

Traffic

Zacharo is located on the National Highway 9, and on the European road 55 between Pyrgos and Kalamata. Furthermore Zacharo is station on the meter gauge railway from Patras through Pyrgos to Kyparissia and Kalamata.

Trivia

Nationally known the place Zacharo by the 2006 film shot Sugartown was (Greek: Οι γαμπρόι I Gambri The Grooms ) by the director Kimon Tsakiris. The film shows the attempt by the mayor of Zacharo to help the single men of the place, to find a wife. He takes to the mayor of the Russian town of Klin contact, continues with 10 marriageable men to Russia and invites women from Russia for a return visit. The film was, inter alia, In March 2007, shown at arte.
