The Zeche Carl was a coal mine in the Altenessen.

History

In 1855, a union Hercules in old food, which began with the depths of a well (not to be confused with the Hercules mine in Essen city center) founded. The well was equipped with a large-sized Malakowturm with two nacelle wings, and went into operation in 1861. The union Hercules was acquired under Friedrich Grillo from Cologne mining club in the same year, and renamed Zeche Carl.

The mine has developed well since the transported gas coal was to be regarded as very high quality and for the coke as well applicable. Beginning in 1883, beside pit Carl a coking plant was operated. An additional air shaft was drilled in 1885 and 1887 beside pit Carl.

1899 a large pulley scaffold was placed with a double promotion to the Malakowturm. The funding could be increased to 300 000 tonnes per year.

After the First World War, the possession of the Cologne mining association passed to the Hoesch AG. This decided the summary of conveyor systems in Altenessener room.

The coal production of the Zeche Carl has already been set in 1929. 1931 the coking plant was decommissioned. The headframe shaft Carl was dismantled. The shaft was assigned as a ventilation shaft of the mine Emil- Emscher.

The air shaft was abandoned in 1955. 1970, all other functions of the system were completed.

Current usage

Finally, the city of Essen purchased the approximately 11 -acre mining site. Through an initiative of citizens, young people and the local protestant church, the initiative center Zeche Carl was founded in 1977 eV and the Zeche Carl converted into a cultural center. The entire group of buildings from Zeche Carl is now a protected monument. Before the western entrance a bedded in meadows parking has been created, designed the larger eastern area to an open landscape park.

The renovated building of the Zeche Carl has more than 25 years a varied cultural program, making it a nationwide highlight the Essen cultural scene. Numerous cabaret and concerts, parties, classes and workshops, readings and exhibitions and much more will take place at the Zeche Carl. In addition, political institutions and self-help groups are located at the Zeche Carl. Also was on the site of the Zeche Carl the Open Channel food.
