History

The Zillierbach was to the 16th century Holtemme then 1558 Zilgerbach. Only later he got his current name. The unstable water flow of the stream was offset by the Worms ditch artificial at the end of the 12th century. From the Middle Ages until the construction of Zillierbachtalsperre (1934-1936) of Bach drove the mills, such as the Forest mill on the creek section between Voigt Stieg and Wernigerode. This section of the valley is still called the Mills today.

Habitat and ecological permeability

The Zillierbach home to a number of rare wild fish, including the protected brook trout, the heraldic animal of both the town of Wernigerode, as well as of the county resin. In addition to the brown trout can be in the water and the minnow, gudgeon and the loach find. To improve the ecological permeability of Zillierbachs a project funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation project was carried out from 2000 to 2002, under which five transverse structures were equipped with fish ladders, to produce a continuous passability for example for the brown trout. The project was also crucial for the award of the town of Wernigerode in the competition " Germany's capital nature ".
