Zoltán Tildy

Zoltán Tildy [ Zolta ː n tildi ] ( born November 18, 1889 in Lučenec; † August 3, 1961 in Budapest) was a Hungarian Prime Minister from 1945 to 1946 and president of the Hungarian State 1946 until 1948.

Tildy was a Protestant pastor and a member of parliament of the Smallholders' Party in interwar Hungary. After the occupation of Hungary by the Red Army was Tildy provisional Prime Minister and won the elections to the National Assembly in November 1945. After the proclamation of the Republic of Tildy was elected on 1 February 1946 President. With the support of the Soviet Union, however, the Hungarian Communist Party became generally stronger and reached in May 1947 following the resignation of Prime Minister Ferenc Nagy. The largely powerless president lost his position in 1948 and was placed under house arrest. On November 3, 1956 Tildy was appointed again in the government of Imre Nagy, the short time was later deposed by Soviet troops. Tildy died in 1961 in Budapest.
