Zürs ( 1717 m above sea level. A. ) is a ski resort in the village of Lech in Vorarlberg.

History

Initially lived some mountain farmers without access road under difficult conditions in this high alpine area and were often cut off from the outside world. With the construction of the road on the Flex Pass the village was in 1897 connected to the road network. Already in 1846 the inn " Zürsch " in the writings mentioned. After the closure of the inn was put into operation in 1906 with the name "Edelweiss" again. In 1897 the family Vonbank of the Land Vorarlberg an annual subsidy of 200 florins that they keep the house "Alpenrose" throughout the year open to tourists. Thanks to the edification of the Flexenstraße (1895-1897) the winter Zürs became increasingly popular among skiers. From 1923 to 1931 more hotels and inns were built in Zürs. In 1938 the city counted already 500 guest beds.

The first ski lessons for locals in 1906 from ski pioneer Viktor Sohm (* 1869, † 1960) from Bregenz held - and other pioneers from the Lake Constance area soon discover the Arlberg and the area around the Flexenpass as a ski resort. Through the organized tourism from the winter 1923/24, the place flourished - the first group ski lessons for guests was offered. Albert Mathies founded the Zürs ski school and the Zürser Ernst Skardarasy 1934 was invited from the ski school Zürs to Australia to teach.

Sepp Bildstein designed in cooperation with Emil Doppelmayr the first drag lift for skiers. The construction work carried out by the company Doppelmayr with Sepp Bildstein. In 1937 the first ski lift in Austria was built on the training hill in Zürs. The new technical achievement has convinced the skier instantly, and even during the Second World War, a second drag lift on Schlegelkopf was built in Lech. The strong development of the ski resort of Lech Zürs with chair lifts began in the 1950s. In 1951, the lift operation was launched on Kriegerhorn. In 1957, the cable car Rüfikopf was put into operation and thus created a ski connection between Lech and Zürs. Thanks to this new ski lift and the famous ski tour " The White Ring ", which runs through Lech, Zürs, train and Upper Lech emerged.

The feature film Peter shoots the bird from (1959 ) with Peter Alexander was filmed here. Over time, more modern lifts and hotels were built in Zürs. Currently, the ski resort of Zürs has 17 hotels and guest houses, mainly in the 4 - and 5-star category.

Culture and sights

The Christ the King Church by the architect Hans Fessler was built from 1935 to 1936 and is located in the east of the village. It belongs to the most remarkable religious buildings of the 30s that have arisen in the Alpine region. Especially nice is the leadership of the Ganges covered up in the church.
