The club was founded in 2002 at the initiative of the Russian Federation from the retort, presumably with the intention that a club from the Moscow Oblast should be the future center of the Russian woman handball. Unlike other Eastern European sports clubs with the word "star " in the name (for example, Steaua Bucharest and Red Star Belgrade ) Zvezda Zvenigorod, however, has no relation to the army. After a year in unterklassigen game operation of the club in 2003 rose to the highest league in Russian women's handball, the Super League, on. In the first season they finished, occupied third place, the clear goal of the club's management but was the championship, so you already committed the star player Jelena Poljonowa in summer 2005. The 2008/09 season, however, should evolve into a disaster for Zvezda Zvenigorod. In the Champions League, the team finished second in the group stage last place and retired. They were joined by financial problems. In the championship final of the season against HK Dynamo Volgograd, there was an uproar: the game there was brutal fouls on both sides. Just before the final whistle triggered two attacks of Zvezda players against the face of the opponent from a brawl between the two teams in the interfered even supervisors.
