Zygmunt Gloger

Zygmunt Gloger ( born November 3, 1845 in Tybory - Kamianka ( Podlasie ); † August 16, 1910 in Warsaw) was a Polish historian, archaeologist, ethnographer and local historian.

Gloger graduated 1867, the Warsaw School " SzkoĹ Główna ", which replaced the abolished by the Russian authorities university. He was influenced by Józef Ignacy Kraszewski, who often visited his parents.

Since 1867, he dealt with ethnographic research, in 1868 he began his studies at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. There he met the poet Wincenty Pol and the ethnographer Oskar Kolberg.

In 1872 he retired to the family estate at Jeżewo Tykocin back, but remained in close contact with the Polish scientists. After her marriage with Aleksandra Jelska he began research journeys that took him through Poland and Lithuania.

Its collections he bequeathed to the he founded Polish History Society ( Polskie Towarzystwo Krajoznawcze ) and several museums.

His most important work was the " Old Polish Encyclopedia " ( Encyclopaedia Staropolska ilustrowana ) ( 1900-1903 ) He was also the author of works on Polish folklore:

  • Obchody weselne ( wedding customs, 1869),
  • Pieśni ludu ( Songs of the People, 1892),
  • Księga rzeczy polskich (Book of Polish matters, 1896),
  • Rok polski w życiu, tradycji i Pieśni ( The Polish year in the life, traditions and songs, 1900).

He wrote a total of about 800 papers and articles.
