Mode

  • The winners of the first round of the World Group play in the semifinals to reach the finals.
  • The losers of the first round of the World Group play against the winner of the World Group II first round. The winners played in the 1996 World Group and the losers in the 1996 World Group II
  • The losers of the World Group II first round played against an experienced team. The qualified teams consisted of two teams of Europa-/Afrika-Zone and each with a team from the Asien-/Ozeanien-Zone and the America zone. The winners played in the 1996 World Group II and the losers in the respective zone.
