2008–09 DFB-Pokal

The DFB Pokal 2008/ 09 began on 7 August 2008 and ended with the final in Berlin's Olympic Stadium on May 30, 2009. Winner of the 66th edition of the competition was Werder Bremen with a 1-0 victory in the final against Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Leverkusen had off in the quarterfinals defending champion Bayern Munich. Bremen was able to qualify through the Cup victory for the play-off round of the UEFA Europa League 2009/10, they would not have achieved as tenth in the Bundesliga and later divorced in the second round against FC Valencia aufgrunde the away goals rule. Leverkusen took ninth in the Bundesliga in the 2009/10 season at any European contest.

A decision of the extraordinary DFB Bundestag from 2006 as the first time were no longer eligible to participate in departure from previous regulations, the second teams of professional clubs.

Draw

The 64 teams will set the draw for the first round in two pots: In amateur pot all teams are included, the

  • Qualified through the national trophies for the DFB Cup have (24)
  • Ascended in the 2007/ 08 season in the Second Bundesliga (4) or
  • Relegated in the 2007/ 08 season from the Second Bundesliga (4).

Each of these teams will be randomly assigned team from the professional pot in which all the teams of the First Bundesliga and those 14 teams are included the Second Bundesliga, are relegated in season 2007/ 08 not from the Second Bundesliga. The venue where the teams enjoy the amateur pot.

In the 2nd round is also drawn from an amateur and a professional pot. But here are the teams that have risen in the Second Bundesliga, as professional teams. Again, enjoy the amateur teams home advantage. If one of the pots are exhausted, is achieved from the remaining pot to an end; this always gets the first geloste in a pairing team home advantage. From the second round is only drawn from a pot. Home Law enjoys a amateur team when they play against a professional team, otherwise the first geloste in a pairing team. The final is traditionally held in Berlin.

1 Main Round

The draw for the first round of the main 2008/ 09 took place on 6 July 2008. It was played from August 7 to August 10, 2008.

2 Main Round

The matches of the second round were played on 23 and 24 September 2008.

Second round

The games in the second round of the DFB Cup took place on 27 and 28 January 2009.

Quarterfinals

The games in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup took place on 3 and 4 March 2009.

Semifinal

The games in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup took place on 21 and 22 April 2009.

Final

The finals of the DFB Cup was held in Berlin on 30 May 2009.

With Werder Bremen for the first time in the history of the DFB Cup won a team competition, only played away games in the tournament. It was the Hamburger SV in the semifinals in a penalty shootout, the 13th of Bremen in their Cup history, defeated. No team examined the decision so far more often from the point.

This final was contested for the first time after 13 years (1995 /96) by two teams, both of which did not qualify via the league or the European Cup for an international competition.
