Banka, Piešťany District

Banka (Hungarian Bánka ) is a municipality in western Slovakia, with 2124 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). Administratively it belongs to the Okres Piešťany, which in turn is a part of the Trnavský kraj. According to the 2001 census, the population is almost exclusively Slovak ( 97.2 %).

Geography

The municipality is located on the western slope of the mountain Považský Inovec ( German Inowetz ), on the left bank of the Waag which is stowed here in the lake Sĺňava. Banka is only two kilometers away from the center of Piešťany.

History

The place is an old settlement site, with discovery of the Bronze Age, Roman and early medieval times. A settlement is mentioned in connection with the now-defunct castle Bana for the first time in 1241.

1973, the city was incorporated into the city of Piešťany. On 1 July 1995 Banka was independent again for a valid referendum.
