Bizen Province

Bizen (Japanese备 前 国, Bizen no kuni ) was an old province of Japan on the side facing the Seto Inland Sea side of Honshu island. She lay on the area of the southeastern part of present-day Okayama Prefecture. Bizen bordered by the provinces of Mimasaka, Harima and Bitchū.

The province was created in the second half of the 7th century by splitting the old province of Kibi (吉 备 国) in the provinces of Bizen ( " front - Kibi " ), Bitchū ( " Central Kibi " ) and Bingo ( "Behind - Kibi " ). The characters of the province were read in the early days as Kibi no michi no kuchi. 713 was separated from the province of Bizen Mimasaka.

Bizens provincial capital ( Kokufu ) was probably in the neighborhood of the borough Kokufu - Ichiba Naka -ku Okayama. From the earliest times Bizen was one of the most important centers of Japanese sword making. In the Muromachi period Bizen was ruled by the Akamatsu clan from the province Mimasaka. In the Sengoku period of Urakami clan had become dominat and settled in Okayama. They were later replaced by even the Ukita clan and Ukita Hideie was one of the five regents appointed Toyotomi Hideyoshi for his son. After Kobayakawa Hideaki Tokugawa Ieyasu helped to win the battle of Sekigahara against Ukita and others, he got Ukitas lands in Bizen and Mimasaka.

In the Edo Period Bizen went through many hands before the modern prefecture system was introduced and the provinces replaced.
