British Open Squash Championships

The British Open Squash Championships, also briefly British Open, are held annually squash tournament for men and women. It takes place in London, England, and is held each part of the PSA World Series of lords and the WSA World Series of ladies. The men's tournament was created in 1930 and currently belongs to the category World Series Platinum, the second highest rating category. The total prize money is thus $ 150,000. The Women since 1922 discharged tournament is part of the World Series Platinum and has a total prize money of 95,000 U.S. dollars.

History

The British Open the men were played in 1931 for the first time. The format provided that the defending champion, should meet three games against a challenger, with one winner was decided the first two of the three games for themselves. This format was retained until 1947, in which not a single final, the third game was needed. Since 1948, the use today KO system is used. For the year 1930, the long-time British champion Charles Read was designated as the first title holder. His first challenger in 1931 was Don Butcher as read Englishman who chose the games for themselves. The women's tournament was already place in 1922 as an amateur competition, only in 1974 were the British Women's Open, a professional tournament. Originally for men and women competitions were held separately, but since 1983 the host takes place together. The most successful players are the British Open Australian Heather McKay (née Blundell ), who won the tournament in a row, 1962-1977 16 times.
