Carlos Coolidge

Carlos Coolidge ( born June 25, 1792 in Windsor, Windsor County, Vermont; † August 15, 1866 ) was an American politician and 1848-1850 Governor of the State of Vermont.

Early years and political rise

Coolidge attended until 1811, the Middlebury College. After two years of studying law and qualifying as a lawyer, he was active in his hometown of Windsor in this profession. Coolidge remained all his life in addition to his political activities lawyer. In Windsor, he was also justice of the peace.

From 1831 to 1836 Coolidge was district attorney and 1834-1842 he was a deputy several times in the House of Vermont. Since 1839 he was president of this chamber. Coolidge was a member of the Whig party. Like most of his party friends in Vermont was also Coolidge an opponent of the annexation of Texas and the Mexican-American War. Both in 1848 and 1849 was Coolidge top candidate of his party for the gubernatorial elections. Governor of Vermont

Coolidge took up his new post on October 1, 1848 and held office until 11 October 1850. During this time, a decision was taken in Vermont, after which one supported the connection of the Province of Canada to the United States, if the not the peaceful relationships loaded to the UK. Background was still the connection of Texas to the United States. This was seen in the northern states, and thus also in Vermont a shift in the political and geographical map in favor of the South. This shift would have let through a port of Canada to more than compensate. In Coolidge's term of office, the court system of the state was reformed.

After the end of his term Coolidge continued his career as a lawyer continued. He died in August 1866., With his wife Harriet Bingham he had two children. Carlos Coolidge was also distantly related to Calvin Coolidge, who was to be President of the United States 1923-1929.
