Carter County (Tennessee)

Carter County is a county located in the state of Tennessee in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Elizabethton.

Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme northeast of Tennessee, on the east by North Carolina, is located in the north about 30 miles from Virginia and has an area of 900 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Sullivan County, Johnson County, Avery County ( North Carolina), Mitchell County ( North Carolina), Unicoi County and Washington County.

History

Carter County was formed on April 9, 1796 from parts of Washington County. It was named for Landon Carter, an officer in the American War of Independence and politician from Tennessee.
