Hickman County (Tennessee)
Hickman County is a county located in the state of Tennessee in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Centerville.
Geography
The County lies to the west of the geographic center of Tennessee and has an area of 1587 square kilometers without significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Dickson County, Williamson County, Maury County, Lewis County, Perry County and Humphreys County.
History
Hickman County was formed on December 3, 1807 from parts of Dickson County. It was named after Edwin Hickman, killed by Indians near the present-day Centerville.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Hickman County 22,295 people in 8,081 households and 5,955 families. The population density was 14 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 93.71 percent White, 4.53 percent African American, 0.48 percent Native American, 0.08 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.29 percent from other races groups; 0.90 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.00 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 8,081 households out of which 33.9 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.4 percent were married couples living together, 9.6 percent were single mothers and 26.3 percent were non-families. 22.6 percent of all households and 9.9 percent lived in persons aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average household size was 3.02 people.
24.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.5 percent between 18 to 24, 31.0 percent between 25 and 44, 23.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.0 percent were older than 65, the average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 112.5 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there 111.5 males.
The median income for a household was $ 31,013, and the median income for a family was $ 36,342. Males have a median income of $ 29,411, women $ 21,185. The per capita income was $ 14,446. 11.6 percent of families and 14.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
