The Chulalongkorn University ( Thai: จุฬาลงกรณ์ มหาวิทยาลัย; named after King Chulalongkorn ) in Bangkok is the oldest and one of the most prestigious universities in Thailand. It was founded on 26 March 1917 by King Vajiravudh (Rama VI. ).

History

The founding of the University dates back to 1871, at that time a school in the Royal Pages Barrack of the Great Palace was established in 1882, the school of King Chulalongkorn was further developed and given the name Suankularb. 1902, the name of the school under Prince Damrong Rajanubhab, younger brother of King Chulalongkorn was changed to Royal Page School. The school, as well as the country developed steadily and King Vajiravudh saw it as important to create new subjects and to adapt the school of the country's development, globalization and economic development. Have been set up courses for law, international relations and medicine. On January 1, 1911 King Vajiravudh raised the status of the school for the first institute of higher learning in Thailand, in the same part of the Royal Page School in Civil Service College of King Chulalongkorn was renamed. The status of a university and the present name from the establishment on 26 March 1917.

During the Second World War ( in South East Asia 1941-1945 ), the general operation of the University was greatly disturbed, also as a result of a great flood in Bangkok in 1942 and subsequent occupation of Bangkok by the Japanese, who took some of the buildings in fog.

On 13 August 1954, the first co-operation agreement with a Western university was closed, the University of Texas, USA. Today there are a large number of worldwide contacts to Europe and Germany.

In 1961 the Graduate School was established in the following years the Research Center and various institutions has been established.

General

The University comprises 42 academic institutions, in 2011, 39,006 students were enrolled, of which 24,951 in undergraduate degree programs, 10,881 in master 's degree programs and 2,510 in doctoral degree programs. In 2011, the University employed 8,066 employees. Since the beginning it puts a lot of emphasis on student self-government. 2003 taught about 28,000 students at the university, the number of academic staff was just under 3,000. The university is considered one of the best in the country but also internationally acquired the " Chula " reputation. President of the University is Pirom Kamolratanakul.

The Chulalongkorn University is located in a traditional rivalry with the other leading university in Bangkok, Thammasat University. Every year in January, the two academies measure in Chula - Thammasat traditional game that is played in Suphachalasai Stadium.

Ranking

In the QS World University Ranking 2013, Chulalongkorn University ranked in almost all subject groups the first place within Thailand. In English, chemistry and civil engineering it is even one of the top 100 universities in the world. Only in the case of medical school, pharmacy and in educational science, it is behind the Mahidol University in second place, in the field of modern linguistics it is behind the Thammasat University at No. 2 in the rankings with listed Faculties Agriculture and Forestry offers the Chulalongkorn not to.
