Dickinson County (Kansas)

Dickinson County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Abilene.

Geography

The County is located in the central north east of Kansas and has an area of 2207 square kilometers, of which eleven square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Clay County, Morris County, Geary County, Marion County, McPherson County, Saline County and Ottawa County.

History

Dickinson County was formed on February 20, 1857 from parts of the nonexistent Davis County and free territory. It was named after Daniel Stevens Dickinson, a U.S. Senator from New York.

According to the census of 2000, there were 19.344 people in Dickinson County. Of these, 338 people were living in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 7903 households, and 5421 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 96.44 percent White, 0.58 percent African American, 0.49 percent Native American, 0.30 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.82 percent from other races groups; 1.36 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.30 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 7903 households out of which 31.1 percent of children under 18 who lived with them. 57.9 percent were married couples living together, 7.7 percent were single mothers and 31.4 percent were non-families. 28.1 percent of all households were single-person households and 14.1 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.94.

25.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.3 percent 18 to 24 years 26.3 percent between 25 and 44, 23.1 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 18.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 95.1 males. For every 100 adult women 18 years and older 91.6 males.

The median income for a household was $ 35,975, and the median income for a family was $ 43,952. Males have a median income of $ 30,889, women $ 18,526. The per capita income was $ 17,780. 5.3 percent of families and 7.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
