Jewell County, Kansas

Jewell County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Mankato. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located north of Kansas, bordering Nebraska and has an area of 3791 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water surface. It borders in Kansas clockwise to the following counties: Republic County, Cloud County, Mitchell County, Osborne County and Smith County.

History

Jewell County was formed on 26 February 1887. It was named after Lewis R. Jewell, an officer in the American Civil War, who was mortally wounded at the Battle of Cane Hill, Arkansas.

According to the census of 2000, there were 3791 people in Jewell County. Of these, 45 people were living in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 1695 households, and 1098 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 98.79 percent White, 0.03 percent African American, 0.34 percent Native American, 0.05 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.05 percent from other races groups; 0.71 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.71 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1695 households out of which 23.7 percent of children under 18 who lived with them. 58.1 percent were married couples living together, 4.8 percent were single mothers and 35.2 percent were non-families. 32.4 percent of all households were single-person households and 18.1 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.80 persons.

21.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 4.4 percent 18 to 24 years 21.5 percent between 25 and 44, 26.2 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 25.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 97.9 males. For every 100 adult women 18 years and older 96.0 males.

The median income for a household was $ 30,538, and the median income for a family was $ 36,953. Males have a median income of $ 24,821, women $ 18,170. The per capita income was $ 16,644. 8.4 percent of families and 11.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
