DLX3

The homeobox protein DLX -3 (gene name: DLX3 ) is a protein found in the nuclei of vertebrate cells. As a transcription factor, it is mainly expressed during the development of the forebrain. Maybe it also participates in the morphogenesis of the skull. Mutations in DLX3 gene have been associated with the autosomal dominant tricho - dento - suffering of the osseous syndrome and amelogenesis imperfecta with Taurodontismus.

Many homeobox containing genes of vertebrates have been identified on the basis of similarity of their sequence to the developmental genes of Drosophila. Members of the DLX gene family contain a homeobox that is related to the " Distal-less " ( Dll ), a gene that is expressed in the head and limbs of a developing fruit fly. The " Distal-less " gene family ( Dlx ) comprises at least six different members, DLX1 - DLX6. The gene is located in a configuration with other members of the gene family on the long arm of chromosome 17
