Falvaterra

Falvaterra is a municipality in the province of Frosinone in the Italian region Latium, located about 568 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). It is located 106 km southeast of Rome and 27 km southeast of Frosinone.

Geography

Falvaterra is above the valley of the Sacco on a spur of the Ausoni. It is a member of the Comunità Montana Ausoni.

The nearby towns are Arce, Castro dei Volsci, Ceprano, Pastena and San Giovanni Incarico.

Traffic

Falvaterra located 11 km from the A1 motorway Autostrada del Sole, exit Ceprano removed.

With the train station Ceprano - Falvaterra (6 km from the center ) of the place is on the railway line Rome - Naples.

History

The inhabitants of 124 BC destroyed by the Romans founded the city Fregellae Fabrateria Nova at today's San Giovanni Incarico. As this 580 AD, was destroyed by the Lombards settled the inhabitants to a more easily defensible hill, which today Falvaterra to. As a result, the place belonged to the abbey of Montecassino that below Falvaterra founded a daughter house.

Around 1200 the family came Falvaterra Pagani who sold it in 1301 to Pietro Caetani. 1556, there was Ferdinand I. to his allies Prospero Colonna. The Colonna it remained until the Italian unification in 1870.

After the destruction of the adjacent Ceprano 1944, the Municipality of Ceprano went for a few years with the City Hall of Falvaterra one.

Since the 19th century Falvaterra suffered from the exodus of its inhabitants in the major Italian cities and to Northern Europe. It was only with the industrialization of the Saccotals since the 1970s, this development came to an end.

Attractions

Falvaterra has a well -preserved town with parts of the city wall.

  • The castle of the Colonna dates from the 14th century.
  • The parish church of Santa Maria from the 14th -century Baroque style in the 16th century.
  • The Monastery of San Sosio lies below the village halfway into Saccotal. Instead of an oratorio which had consecrated the Holy Socius the Benedictines of Monte Cassino, 1751 Passionistenkloster was founded.
