Frederick H. Gillett

Frederick Huntington Gillett ( born October 16, 1851 in Westfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, † July 31, 1935 in Springfield, Massachusetts ) was an American politician ( Republican), who represented the state of Massachusetts in both chambers of Congress.

Life

Gillett studied at Amherst College and Harvard Law School law. He began his law practice in Springfield in 1877. From 1879 to 1882 he was Assistant Attorney General of Massachusetts. For two terms he was a member of the House of Representatives from Massachusetts before he was elected to the 53rd Congress of the United States.

He sat from 1893 to 1925 in the House of Representatives of the United States and then from 1925 to 1931 in the U.S. Senate. As Speaker of the House, he was from 1919 to 1925 the chairman of the parliament chamber.

In 1915 married Christine Rice Hoar Gillett, the widow of his former colleagues Rockwood Hoar.
