Galich, Russia

Galich (Russian Галич ) is a town with 17 346 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in Russia in the Kostroma Oblast.

Geography

It is located 121 km north-east of the regional center of Kostroma on the southern shore of the lake and is Galitscher to the Trans-Siberian Railway ( 500 km from Moscow ) attached. The nearest towns are Tschuchloma ( 45 km northeast of Galich ) and Bui (48 miles west).

History

Though founded in the city is either 1158 or 1159, as Galich, according to documents from the Grand Duke and Moscow - founder Yuri Dolgoruky was created. Is named the city as well as a number of other ancient cities in Central Russia, according to a city from the early hours of the early medieval Kievan Rus, after which now belong to Ukraine Halych.

1246 Galich was mentioned in Russian documents as the capital of an independent principality, which was then ruled by a brother of national hero Alexander Nevsky. Lost its independence in 1363, the Principality and the Grand Duchy of Moscow was affiliated. Due to continuous wars between the principalities Moscow Galich used in the 15th century as a fortress, to which were built on a hill on the territory of today's defenses with an earthen wall. After decades of sieges and battles Galich went in 1450 final at the Moscow Grand Duchy, the united now all Russian principalities in itself. Some remains of the former fortifications are preserved in Galich today.

In the 16th century flourished in Galich, which was on a road to the port city of Arkhangelsk, the trading of grain and furs on. 1609, the village was attacked and destroyed during the Smuta of Polish-Lithuanian forces. However, thanks to the favorable geographical position Galich was able to regain its importance for trade in the 17th century. 1778 received it as a circle center of the Kostroma province city rights. His former economic importance Galich lost but at the end of the 18th century.

In the 19th century Galich was built primarily on a general plan of the 1770s, which is partly reflected in the architecture of the city to this day. During the Soviet time here larger industrial companies were set up, Galich temporarily belonged to the so called Ivanovo industrial district.

Significant are Galich in the machine construction, metal industries and the wood or furniture industry.

In the near Galich a 350 -meter-high radio mast to the spread of FM and TV - programs exist.

Attractions

The oldest surviving structure in Galich is the former Paissi Monastery from the 15th century. In the city center you will find a number of historic buildings from the 19th century, including the Annunciation Cathedral (1815 ) and the former trade series ( 1825). The town also has a local history museum.
