Goudargues

Goudargues is a commune with 1063 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Gard and the Languedoc- Roussillon region. It lies at the southern end of the Gorges de la Cèze; the community is largely covered by Mediterranean forest.

History

Several dolmen in the hills around the village indicate an early settlement of the area. The present town is probably due to a settlement dating from the 8th century. After the victory over the Saracens was a nephew of Charlemagne built a small monastery. Probably towards the end of the reign of Charles the second, larger monastery and a Romanesque chapel were built. Probably in the 12th century was a hall in the form of a barrel vault, in which it was the refectory and is used for cultural today.
