Rochefort-du-Gard

Rochefort -du -Gard is a commune with 7443 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Gard and the Languedoc -Roussillon region.

Location

Rochefort -du -Gard is one of the easternmost towns of the department of Gard. With 3403 hectares, it has the second- largest surface area in the community association Grand Avignon.

Nearest large city is Avignon in the east of the church. Other nearby cities, are orange in the north, as well as Nimes and Montpellier in the south west.

History

Rochefort belonged to the diocese of Avignon, but mainly to Viguerie Roquemaure and the diocese of Uzès.

In the 12th century, the abbey of Saint -André de Villeneuve- lès -Avignon Rochefort had in the Priory Sanctae Victoriae and the parish church of Sancti Bardulphi. The Prior of Rochefort served as a supplier of the monastery.

After that Rochefort seat of a barony, which included the towns of Domazan, Estézargues, Fournès, Pujaut, Saint- Hilaire- d'Ozilhan, Saze, Tavels and Valliguière. The priory of Saint- Bertulphe 1410 has been merged with the parish church Notre -Dame de Rochefort.
