Les Angles (Gard)

Les Angles is a commune with 8275 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Gard and the Languedoc -Roussillon region.

Geography

Les Angles is located on a plateau high above the Rhone Valley towards Avignon. Thanks to its special location close to the city of Avignon, who has a new TGV station, the resort attracts many new residents and numerous companies. Their development takes place mainly along the road from the neighboring Villeneuve- lès- Avignon to Nîmes.

Actually, the city is divided into two halves: the younger part of his residential and commercial area, and the high-lying town with its stone houses and narrow streets overlooking the Rhone valley that leads up to Tarascon and Beaucaire.

History

The name of the place goes to the wedge shape of the village back ( like a wedge for splitting wood) and is first mentioned in 1143. At that time belonged to the parish church of Sainte -Marie and three rural churches of the Abbey of Saint -André.

In the center of the old town, the Notre- Dame-de- l'Assomption, a Gothic church from the 15th century, with a high square tower above the rectory is located.
