Les Angles (Gard)
Les Angles is a commune with 8275 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Gard and the Languedoc -Roussillon region.
Geography
Les Angles is located on a plateau high above the Rhone Valley towards Avignon. Thanks to its special location close to the city of Avignon, who has a new TGV station, the resort attracts many new residents and numerous companies. Their development takes place mainly along the road from the neighboring Villeneuve- lès- Avignon to Nîmes.
Actually, the city is divided into two halves: the younger part of his residential and commercial area, and the high-lying town with its stone houses and narrow streets overlooking the Rhone valley that leads up to Tarascon and Beaucaire.
History
The name of the place goes to the wedge shape of the village back ( like a wedge for splitting wood) and is first mentioned in 1143. At that time belonged to the parish church of Sainte -Marie and three rural churches of the Abbey of Saint -André.

In the center of the old town, the Notre- Dame-de- l'Assomption, a Gothic church from the 15th century, with a high square tower above the rectory is located. The building was constructed to replace an old Saracen fortress. In the 16th century, Protestants populated the village erected, there a garrison and fortified the church and ancillary buildings. The old adjoining cemetery was replaced by a petite outdoor stage. On display there is also a bakery, the old town hall, the chapel Saint- Esteve and the castle of Pontmartin.

In the old town, a heritage trail with various routes has been established: Routes of painters who were inspired by the historic sites and monuments of the town over the centuries, as well as botanical routes which present the botanical diversity of the home and its impact on economy and trade.

- Victor Crumière (1895-1950), French painter

- You sound Herbert (1913-1998), German painter. Studied Fine Arts in Leipzig and Dresden and lived since 1984 in Les Angles. Survived by many extremely intimist drawings of the village, the landscape and the region.
- Louis Agricola Montagné (1879-1960), French painter, is considered a major part of his life in Paris and Les Angles. Lived in the Castle of Pontmartin.
