Vers-Pont-du-Gard

Vers- Pont -du -Gard is a commune with 1751 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Gard of the Languedoc -Roussillon region. The municipal area is the Pont du Gard.

Geography

Vers- Pont -du -Gard is located on the Gardon, between Uzes and the Rhone.

History

In ancient times, the area was used for agriculture intensive. Near the Mas des Chèvres bearings were found for harvest products from this period. The name of the village seems to go back to Roman times, just like the famous Pont du Gard. The quarries, from which came the material for the bridge could not be found because they were in the aftermath continues to be used and worn. The Pont du Gard was apparently built in the middle of the 1st century. At the beginning of the 5th century it was still being used. Probably during the next two centuries, the aqueduct was abandoned. In the year 688 the Duke of Aquitaine had built a castle, which he placed under the protection of the Bishop of Mende. From the fortress was only one tower, which was converted into a clock tower later. Pont du Gard

The Pont du Gard is a Roman aqueduct on the area of ​​the municipality verse -Pont- du- Gard. The aqueduct is of impressive height and includes one of the best preserved water channels from the Roman period in France. The Pont du Gard is one of the most important surviving Roman bridges in the world and is one of the main attractions of southern France.

Pont du Gard literally means bridge over the Gard, which the nowadays better known as the Gardon river is meant, from which the name of the department is derived.
