List of English consorts

The List of Royal Consorts of English monarchs chronologically lists all known to us today spouse of the English monarch, for which purpose both the monarch of the Anglo-Saxon small kingdoms during the Heptarchy, as well as the existing for approximately 926 Kingdom England count. Not included in the list of the ruling in its own right queens (Queen Regnants ) of England (see → List of rulers of England ), those spouses of English monarchs who died before their accession to the throne, and Isabel of Gloucester ( † 1217 ), whose marriage was canceled with John Lackland shortly before or after his accession to the throne.

The wife of the English king is usually referred to as Queen Consort and often only as a queen. Women as reigning queens (Queen Regnant ) are rare, which is why it is missing for the position of a male Royal Consort also at a fixed name. The usual title for the English Queens consort was Queen consort of England from 1543 and Queen consort of England and Ireland. From 1603 was the title of Queen consort of England, Scotland and Ireland, as ruled by this time to England and Scotland into personal union.

With the merger of the Kingdoms of England and Scotland in 1707 to the Kingdom of Great Britain there are no English, but only British Royal Consort (see → List of Royal Consorts of the British monarch ).

List of Queens Consort of the English kingdoms ( from the 6th century)

During the so-called Heptarchy developed with the end of the 6th century, several competing Anglo-Saxon small kingdoms in England. Of the very few of these early English kings you know whether they had a "queen" at her side. Also by us at present known and listed here consorts often lack important information such as names, birth and death dates, and even the existence of a marriage is often uncertain.

List of Queens Consort of England (927-1066)

About the time of emergence of the kingdom of England, there are different opinions. Ever since the conquest of Northumbria by Æthelstan, King of Wessex and Mercia, in the year 927 saw the existence of a single English kingdom as given. Thus, it was also the first Queens of England. Of the 15 kings of England before the Norman conquest of England in 1066 seem not to have married 5, these were Æthelstan ( 924-939 ) Eadred ( 946-955 ), Edward the Martyr ( 975-978 ), Hardi Knut ( 1035 / 1040-1042) and Edgar Aetheling ( 1066).

List of Royal Consorts of England (1066-1558)

Of the 24 or 25 with Matilda monarch of England to the personal union between the Kingdoms of England and Scotland in 1603 have 4 never married, these were Wilhelm II ( 1087-1100 ), Edward V ( 1483 ), Edward VI. (1547-1553) and Elizabeth I (1558-1603 ).

As of 1603, the kingdoms of England and Scotland were ruled by a monarch in a personal union and their spouses were now simultaneously Royal Consort of Scotland (for the previous Royal Consort of Scotland → see: List of Royal Consorts of Scottish monarchs ). William III. (1689-1702) is not to be among the Royal Consorts and therefore not listed here, because although he Spouse of Mary II of England (1689-1694), daughter of James II (1685-1688), along with her and also still prevailed after her death as King of England.
