The Logroño-Agoncillo Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto de Logroño- Agoncillo ) is a civil - military- Airport ( IATA code: RJL, ICAO code: LERJ ) in the Autonomous Community of La Rioja in Spain. The airport is located about 10 km east of the city of Logroño. The Spanish army uses the place as a base de Agoncillo.

History

The origins of today's airport on the territory of the municipality Agoncillo go back to the Aeródromo de Recajo the 1920s. The airfield of the resulting 1924-1928 second-rate military airfield ( Base Aérea secundaria ) was approximately 1000 m long and 600 m wide. The first stationed aircraft of the Spanish Air Force reconnaissance aircraft were the British company de Havilland. The since 1932, known as Aeródromo de Agoncillo device was used during the Spanish Civil War by units of the German Condor Legion. The Ejército del Aire opened in the middle during the war in 1938 a maintenance facility, which until the 1950s had stock.

The meantime developed airfield was released in 1946 for civilian shared use, but played in aviation never a big role. Later on flying units of the Guardia Civil and the Spanish Army ( FAMET ) were stationed, which meant that the operation in 1994 was transferred from the air to the land forces.

The Government of La Rioja decided in 1996 to expand the airfield to an airport. The expansion project was launched two years later and after five years, the new airport was inaugurated in 2003.

Military use

Since 1974, the Base de Agoncillo the Fuerzas del Ejército de Tierra Aero Móviles is home to the third helicopter regiment, Battalón de Helicopteres de manobra III ( BHELMA III). Since 1991, the regiment was often abroad for operational deployment and the beginning of 2011 we already flown to the 100,000 flight hour at the current location. Civil use: airline and objectives

Since May 2003, the airport is also used for civilian - commercially, but it is one of the most frequented at least airports in the country: The only scheduled flight is a daily connection with Air Nostrum in code share with Iberia to Madrid (September 2011). Middle of the first decade of the 21st century was one of the airport in the meantime more than 50,000 passengers.
