Melenki, Vladimir Oblast

Melenki (Russian Меленки ) is a town in Vladimir Oblast (Russia) with 15,206 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the eastern part of the Meschtschoraniederung about 150 km south-east of Vladimir Oblasthauptstadt the headwaters of the Unscha, a left tributary of the opening into the Volga River Oka.

Melenki is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

Melenki originated in the early 18th century as a village owned by the Russian Tsars court. The name derives from the river Melenka, apparently derived from the Russian word for Melniza mill ( see also coat of arms ).

1778 was the place the municipal law.

Culture and sights

In the city a bell tower from 1878 is preserved.

Economy and infrastructure

In Melenki there are companies in the textile and light industry, mechanical engineering, as well as the food industry and building materials industry.

The town is the terminus of a good 20 -kilometer railway line ( freight only ), which branches off in Butylizy of the Moscow- Kazan - Arzamas. By Melenki also leads the R125 road Kasimov - Murom Pavlovo - Nizhny Novgorod.
