Moniteau County, Missouri

The Moniteau County is a county located in the U.S. state of Missouri. In 2010, the County had 15 607 inhabitants and a population density of 14.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is California, which was named after California Wilson, a woman who paid the builder of the first houses with whiskey.

Geography

The County is situated near the geographic center of Missouri on the right bank of the Missouri River. It has an area of 1085 square kilometers, of which 6 square kilometers is water area. At the Moniteau County borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

The Moniteau County was formed in 1845. It was named after the Moniteau Creek. Moniteau is the French expression for the Indian word Manitu, which means " great spirit ".
