Montceaux-l'Étoile

Montceaux- l'Étoile is a commune with 283 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in southern Burgundy, in the department of Saône -et -Loire.

Location

Montceaux- l'Étoile is located about 300 meters west of the river Arconce at an altitude of about 270 meters above sea level. inst in the ancient cultural landscape of the brionnais. The place is located about 16 km ( driving distance ) southwest of Paray -le- Monial and about 40 kilometers north of Roanne. The places worth seeing Anzy -le- Duc, Semur -en- brionnais, Marcigny and Iguerande all lie within a radius of about 15 kilometers; Charlieu is located about 31 kilometers southeast.

Demographics

In the 19th century the place had at times over 600 residents. The phylloxera crisis and the mechanization of agriculture ensured since a significant population decline.

Economy

The hilly region of Montceaux- l'Étoile has always been dominated by agriculture, which until the 19th century, viticulture was also operated. Meanwhile, the cattle ( Charolais cattle ) plays a major role. The place itself functioned until the early 20th century as a craft, trade and service center for several hamlets and isolated farmsteads in the area.

History

In 1164 Pope Alexander II placed the church ( ecclesiam de Moncellis ) and thus the entire town of basic rule of the Abbey of Saint -Martin d' Autun. In 1248 Louis IX handed. the site - along with Ligny -en- brionnais - thanks for the support of the 6th crusade to his companion Damas de Vichy. The place remained until the French Revolution in the hands of the extended family.
