Montefranco

Monte Franco is a municipality with 1292 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Province of Terni in the Umbria region of Italy.

Geography

The municipality covers 10 km ². It is located about 70 km southeast of Perugia and about 10 km northeast of Terni on the river Nera in the mountains Bufone Monte Moro.

The districts include Fontechiaruccia, Montemoro, Monzano, Vaccheria and Varcone.

The neighboring municipalities are Arrone, Ferentillo, Spoleto (PG) and Terni.

History

The town was at the time of the Lombards in Umbria. Since that time the place was associated with the Count of Spoleto. Around the year 1000 the castle Castello di Bufone, which was occupied by Otto IV was born in 1209. In the middle of the 13th century ( 1228 or 1258 ) is the place for free Commune, which is taken from the Abbey of San Pietro in Valle in the Confederazione dei castelli dodici (Association of twelve castles ) 1395. 1527 the church will free commune again, but is largely under the control of Spoleto and the Papal State. There, the place remained until 1860, when Umbria was in the wake of the Risorgimento region of Italy. In 1927, the town was divided into the newly founded province of Terni.
