Neustift im Stubaital

Neustift im Stubaital is a municipality with 4563 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Innsbruck Land, Tyrol ( Austria ).

Neustift is ( to Sölden and Matrei in East Tyrol), the third largest municipality in Tyrol and one of Austria's most important tourism centers with over 1 million overnight stays per year. From afar recognizable landmark next to the snowy mountain glaciers is the parish church of St. George, Tyrol second largest village church.

Geography

Location

Neustift is located in the Tyrolean mountains, about 25 km south of the provincial capital of Innsbruck located.

It is the farthest of the five municipalities in the Stubai Valley. At the entrance of the valley to raise massive limestone massifs. In the back of the valley, in Neustift village area, climb the gneiss and granite peaks with 109 three thousand meter peaks up to the eternal ice. History

Prehistoric finds from the Early Bronze Age (about 1800-1000 BC) show that the valley has been inhabited since ancient times. Some floor, pasture and house names point to a pre-Roman settlement.

When Emperor Augustus BC penetrated with his legions against 15 North, also living here mountain people and their territory was subjected to as a province of Raetia. By 1000 the Stubai valley was first mentioned under Stupeia, 1400, the United Stubai community was divided into five small communities: Telfes, Schoenberg, bodice, Fulpmes and " the valley ". The parish church is in Neustift in Tyrol 's second largest village church. On the beautiful cemetery of the " glacier priest " and co-founder of the Alpine Club Franz Senn is buried.

During World War II, the SS had a high mountain school in Neustift, in which also prisoners of the Dachau concentration camp were used for work.

Peter Schönherr was elected mayor and Hermann Stern as Vice Mayor.

Regional Policy

The municipality is part of the Tyrolean Stubai Valley Planning Association and the tourism region Stubai Tirol. Seat of the Municipality Planning Association 's bodice, chairman of the Mayor ibid., Manfred Leitgeb. Headquarters of the Tourist Association is in the Stubai in Neustift house.

Center of the municipality is the village of Neustift in the Stubai Valley. It is located about 20 kilometers in a straight line to the southeast from the city center of Innsbruck. It is located on the 990 m above sea level. A. Height nestling in the rear left of the Stubai Valley Ruetz.

The village with its direct neighboring villages ( the Zählsprengel Neustift -Dorf ) includes about 450 buildings with nearly 1,900 inhabitants, which is about two fifths of the community population.

Neustift is a younger Kirchdorf, which became the administrative center of the municipality in the course of time.

Economy and infrastructure

Neustift is connected to Innsbruck and the other Stubaiorten by the bus line Stubai ( line ST).

The main industry is tourism with the glacier Stubai Glacier ski area and the whole composite Stubai Tirol. Together with the plants in the other three ski areas ( Penalty lifts, Schlick2000 and Serles lifts ) run within the valley 42 railways and lifts.

Culture and sights

Of particular interest is the approximately 3.5 kilometers south of the hamlet Ranalt located Grawa waterfall. This is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Austria, which is accessed by the "Wild -water route " with two viewing platforms.

Tradition and customs

Most customs are intended for ages from religious life and by the end of the agricultural cycle year. With the changing purely peasant village community to today's society many old customs in the consciousness of many people have lost their meaning - often new customs have been formed, which correspond to the forms of life in today's society better.

Ascension, Corpus Christi, and the High Women are still high feast days which are celebrated with festive procession.

The Sacred Heart Fire, the Michaelmas market and the Harvest Festival in late fall among other cornerstones of this culture.

A Stubai husband had to have at the wedding:

  • A broad hand, so he can see much through his fingers,
  • A large neck, so that he can swallow a lot,
  • A solid liver because much about crawling,
  • A rock-hard heart, so that he does not feel the stitches.

On the wedding day the bride put a had a proper garment over the pants of the man, she had the pants.

Not all traditions have reached the 21st century, but in the Stubai Valley tradition and customs is already listed solely for the sake of tourism yet.
