History

In 1957 began the construction of the nuclear power plant. It is the oldest commercial nuclear power plant in Russia. The owner and operator of the nuclear power plant is the state enterprise RosEnergoAtom.

The nuclear power plant today has two decommissioned and three active blocks.

The nuclear power plant was mainly used for the development of pressurized water reactors VVER. All reactors are therefore prototypes whose series versions later in other nuclear power plants were used.

The reactors 3-5 had originally an operating license for 30 years. In 2002, the authorization for units 3 and 4 was extended for another 15 years. In 2010, the Block 5 was modernized, its approval is eventually extended by 25 years.

The nuclear power plant has partnerships to share their experiences with the nuclear power plants Gundremmingen ( Germany ), Penly (France), Diablo Canyon and Vermont Yankee (USA).
