K

The Upper Hauenstein is a pass in the Swiss canton of Basel- Country in the village of Long Bruck between Balsthal in the canton of Solothurn and Waldenburg. The pass lies on the watershed at an altitude of 731 m. About the Pass Main road 12 of Berne and Solothurn to Basel. It creates the connection between the streets at the foot of the Jura in Oensingen and the Ergolztal in Liestal. Until the opening of the A1 motorway, it was the most important route between Basel and Solothurn.

Because the modern main road follows the north of Langenbruck a slightly different line, stayed there get carved in a short distance into the stone track ruts, whose age is not determined with certainty. You might originate from the Roman period, as the way to the big road from Aventicum ( Avenches ) through Salodurum ( Solothurn ) to Augusta Raurica ( Augst, Kaiseraugst ) belonged, or from a road expansion in the Middle Ages.

Between Balsthal and Holder Bank early path -grooves are visible. Deeply incised ravines and the paving of the Chaussée 18th century attest to the importance of the road.
