Osterøy is an island and a commune in the Norwegian Fylke Hordaland.

Island

The island is located northeast of the mountains and is surrounded by a ring of three fjords:

  • Osterfjord in the northwest,
  • Bosvik in the south (hence its name),
  • Veafjord in the east ( south wide to merge with Bosvik, north connected by the Kallestadsund with arms of Easter Fjords ).

The association of Osterfjord and Bosvik is connected via various arms of the sea to the open sea. The south bank of the Sørfjord belongs to the municipality of the city of Bergen.

With an area of 328 square kilometers, the island is the largest Osterøy not directly lying in the open sea island in Norway. Just over a fifth of them in the east part of the predominantly located on the mainland municipality Vaksdal, the rest to the commune Osterøy.

Traffic

Since the northeast of the island is rough mountains, it has two separate road networks. The far greater opening up the community Osterøy and southern part of the island belonging to Vaksdal. It was only in 1997 with the completion of Osterøy Bridge ( Osterøybroen ) on the east end of the Sørfjord a fixed link to the mainland. At the other end of the bridge there is a stopping point for the cable car. The northern network of only about 10 km in length consists of a street with a few short branch roads, which is connected since 1985 by the bridge over the Kallestadsund to the mainland.

Culture

In the far south of the island lies the Court Havra, also Havretunet, now a museum, one of the best preserved farmsteads of the Norwegian Vestlandes.

The composer Ole Bull once had a country house on the island ( in Valestrand ) and the young politician gates Eikeland was born on Osterøy.
