Phineas Hitchcock

Phineas Warren Hitchcock ( born November 30, 1831 in New Lebanon, Columbia County, New York, † July 10, 1881 in Omaha, Nebraska ) was an American politician.

Biography

Early life

Phineas Hitchcock was born the son of a farmer in easy circumstances, and grew up in Massachusetts, where he received his secondary education in 1855 at Williams College. At college, he joined the acquaintance of James A. Garfield, who later became U.S. president, and James Gilfillan, the future Treasurer of the United States of Finance.

After a two-year study of law, he moved to Omaha in 1857, where he practiced as a lawyer. Due to his studies, he spoke fluent German and French. From 1861 to 1864 Hitchcock held the office of U.S. Marshals for the Nebraska Territory.

Political career

1865 Republican was elected as a non-voting delegate to the Nebraska Territory in the U.S. Congress. There he remained on 4 March 1865 to 1 March 1867.

As both Nebraska and Iowa in the late 1860s U.S. states were, Hitchcock worked in both cases from 1867 to 1869 on behalf of the government as a surveyor, whose job it was, among other things, but to determine the state borders including those of the counties.

1870 Hitchcock ran successfully for a seat in the U.S. Senate and represented Nebraska a long legislative session on 4 March 1871 to 3 March 1877. Through his work as a surveyor conditionally, Hitchcock was at that time Chairman of the Senate Committee on Territories.

Late life

Parallel to his work as a politician Hitchcock published articles in daily newspapers, a job that did carry his son Gilbert, as this 1885 Omaha World-Herald founded.

Family and death

Hitchcock married on December 27, 1858 Annie M. Monell, daughter of a wealthy physician. They had three children, daughter Grace and sons Gilbert and John. Although the spouses Hitchcock had a good relationship, Annie their children in Europe decided to educate while Phineas Hitchcock conditionally stayed by his political activities in the United States. So spent Annie and the children, including two years in Germany Baden- Baden and in Dresden.

Died 1877 Annie Hitchcock; a stroke of fate, with the Phineas Hitchcock never end. He died four years later from a serious illness at the age of 49 years.

Others

In his honor, was named in Hitchcock County one of the counties in Nebraska. His son Gilbert followed his father into politics and was from 1911 to 1923 even U.S. Senator.
