Pickens County (South Carolina)
Pickens County is a county located in the state of South Carolina in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Pickens.
Geography
The County is located in northwestern South Carolina, is bordered to the north by North Carolina and has an area of 1326 square kilometers, of which 39 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Transylvania County ( North Carolina), Greenville County, Anderson County and Oconee County.
History
Pickens County was formed in 1826. It was named after Andrew Pickens, a military leader in the American Revolutionary War and a member of the Congress of the United States.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Pickens County 110 757 people in 41 306 households, and 28,459 families. The population density was 86 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 90.27 percent White, 6.82 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 1.18 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.70 percent from other races groups; 0.85 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.70 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 41 306 households 31.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.6 percent were married couples living together, 9.4 percent were single mothers, 31.1 percent were non-families, 23.3 percent of all households and 8.2 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.95 persons.
22.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 17.5 percent between 18 to 24, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44, 21.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 99.6 males to every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.2 males.
The median income for a household was $ 36,214, and the median income for a family was $ 44,507. Males have a median income of $ 31,795, women $ 22,600. The per capita income was $ 17,434. 7.8 percent of families and 13.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
