Riol

Riol is a municipality in the Moselle Franconian language area in the district of Trier -Saar castle in Rhineland- Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Schweich on the Roman wine road.

History

Even in ancient times, Riol made ​​a name by the described by Tacitus Battle of Rigodulum ( Celtic origin) in the year 70 AD, when the Romans defeated the Treverians ( Celtic- Germanic tribe ). Scene of the weapons were crossing the mountain ranges in Riol who had converted the Treverians hurriedly through ditches and stone dams as a bulwark. The rugged sloping part of the mountain train allowed the Moselanern, a time to resist. In the long run, however, they could not withstand the overwhelming power of the Romans. With this defeat of Treverians Trier was revealed the winner. Nevertheless, the Romans spared the renegade city. In the period following the Roman culture became more and more influence.

In 1497 the Riolsburg was first mentioned as a possession of the Counts of Sayn Sebastian. At the beginning of the 17th century, the castle was owned by the Husmann Namedy who then called themselves also Barons of Riolsburg. The castle became extinct during the Thirty Years' War. From it, no remnants are preserved.

Parts of a Roman villa can be seen in today's staircase that leads up to the parish church of St. Martin. The Romanesque bell tower of the church was built on Roman foundations.
