Wawern

Wawern is a municipality in the Trier -Saar castle in Rhineland- Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality of conc.

Location

Wawern is about five kilometers north of Saar castle and also five kilometers south-west of Konz along Route 137 near the Saar. A part of the municipality, the Wawerner fraction is designated as a nature reserve.

History

The name Wawern should be derived from the Treverian Waberla = squirming swamp meadow, as even today are still in this Wawerner break.

In the Thirty Years' War, the town was almost completely destroyed, the population dropped to nearly a third, from cattle, there were very low levels of stocks. In 1777, burned the old center from 1814 and the whole place with the Church, were spared only the winery and the mill. In the lower village of 31 houses were destroyed by another fire in 1872.

Towards the end of the 18th century Jews were settled in Wawern. They built around 1839 its own synagogue. Around 1870 was half of the citizens of the Jewish faith, towards the end of the 19th century lived in Wawern 70, 1933, 45 Jewish citizens. During the period of Nazi dictatorship probably all community members were deported and killed.

On July 20, 1946 Wawern was attached together with a further 80 municipalities in the counties of Trier and the Saar castle on February 16, 1946, separated from the rest of the French occupation zone Saarland. On June 8, 1947, this French territorial expansion was taken back down to 21 municipalities again so came Wawern to the 1946 newly formed state of Rhineland -Palatinate.

Events

The wine blossom festival takes place on the third weekend in June. In the former synagogue numerous events and exhibitions are offered.

Economy

In the past, agriculture and wine were the main sources of income. Today there are two Wawerner wineries in Home Purchase and few sideline. Foreign wine makers have acquired larger areas, so that the character of a wine village remains. There is also a sawmill, two carpenter's and other companies. The Wawerner citizens are craftsmen, employees, civil servants and self-employed.
