Roman Catholicism in South Africa

The Roman Catholic Church in South Africa is part of the worldwide Roman Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope and curia in Rome.

In South Africa, about 7 % of the total members of the Catholic Church, and therefore live there 3.3 million Catholics. Of these, approximately 2.7 million members of black African ethnic groups, such as the Zulu, Xhosa and Sotho. There are 26 dioceses and archdioceses as well as an apostolic vicariate in the Episcopal Conference of South Africa ( The Southern African Catholic Bishops Conference, SACBC ) are represented. Chairman of the SACBC is the Archbishop of Johannesburg Buti Joseph Tlhagale OMI; Secretary General since 1 March 2012, sister Hermenegild Makoro CPS.

Representatives of the Holy See in South Africa - the apostolic nuncio - since the August 17, 2006 Archbishop James Patrick Green. His office space boasts South Africa and Lesotho, Swaziland and Namibia as well as the Apostolic Delegate in Botswana.

Liturgical language is both English and Afrikaans.

The " Sacred Heart Abbey Inkamana ", a Benedictine abbey founded Mission on August 3, 1922 as a mission station by Bishop Thomas Spreiter OSB in Vryheid ( KwaZulu -Natal), belongs to the Benedictine Congregation of St. Ottilia.
