The Estadio San Mames was a football stadium in Bilbao. It was the club's football stadium of the Spanish side Athletic Bilbao and had 39,750 seats. From the fans called the San Mames " La Catedral ".

History

Designed by Manuel Maria Smith venue was opened in 1913 and was the oldest stadium in Spain. Judging by today's standards, was the construction of a bargain. The cost of building the stadium in 1912 estimated the association with 50,000 pesetas. Most of this sum, approximately 40,000 pesetas paid the fans of Athletic out of pocket.

On August 21, 1913, the San Mames was officially opened. The first goal scored Athletics legendary striker Pichichi / Pitxitxi ( Rafael Moreno Aranzadi ), in whose honor under the roof of the main grandstand, a bust was erected.

In the years 1952 and 1953 led to the first extensive reconstruction of the San Mames. During this time, the legendary Arco ( German bow ) was built, a metal frame which spans the entire grandstand and stabilized the roof. Thus, the views of the playing field does not support pillars and other restricted sight is impaired. The Arco is to survive the demolition of the old stadium. The last substantial modernization learned the San Mames occasion of the Football World Cup 1982. On 16 June 1982, the attendance record was the World Cup group match between England and France with 44 172 reached.

The San Mames was very closely modeled on the English construction stages. In hardly any stadium in Europe it was so close to the pitch as here. Fences and Practice nets did not exist. Until a few years ago did not even bother Band Advertisement viewers. Bilbao allowed this, as the last Spanish club until the early 2000s.

New

In March 2006 it was decided by the city of Bilbao and the club to replace the no longer relevant to today's standards Stadium with a new building. Construction will occur in two phases. In phase 1, the pitch of the new stadium was turned 90 degrees to the previous place. On the adjacent former site of the old exhibition of Bilbao that already has all of the buildings were demolished, three new stands were built. At the beginning of the 2013/14 season pulls the football operation in the new stadium with 36,159 seats around and then the old stadium is demolished. On the site of the old stadium built in phase 2, the fourth gallery of the new stadium and a new campus for the University of Bilbao. The new stadium will have a capacity of at completion 53 332 spectators.

On 26 May 2010 undertook honorary president and record player José Ángel Iribar the groundbreaking ceremony for the San Mames Barria. On May 26, 2013 was their last league game, a 0-1 defeat in the 90th minute against Levante UD at the San Mames instead. With a friendly match between Athletic beginning in June 2013 and a selection of the region, the association and his followers adopted by the nearly 100 -year-old home ground. On June 6, 2013, the demolition of the San Mames, which should be completed by the end of August of the year began.
