Santa Margherita di Belice

Santa Margherita di Belice is a city in the province of Agrigento in the Italian region Sicily.

Location and data

Santa Margherita di Belice located about 60 km northwest of the provincial capital Agrigento. The town has 6494 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012), which are mainly engaged in agriculture.

Santa Margherita di Belice, together with the municipalities of Sciacca, Sciacca Sambuca di Sicilia and one of the major wine producing regions of Sicily. Since 1994, exists for the vineyards of the community with the " Santa Margherita di Belice DOC ' own designation of origin of quality wines ( Denominazione di origine controllata ).

The neighboring community are Contessa Entellina (PA ), Sciacca, Montevago, Salaparuta (TP) and Sambuca di Sicilia.

History

The community was founded in 1572 by Antonio Corbera. Then you got the name Menzil -el- Sindi. In the 1968 earthquake, the church was almost completely destroyed. The church was rebuilt after the earthquake.

Attractions

The parish church was renovated in the 18th century and stands on the village square. Likewise, there is the Filangeri - palace from the 18th century and the Palazzata.
