Siculiana

Siculiana is a city in the province of Agrigento in the Italian region Sicily.

Location and data

Siculiana situated 18 km west of Agrigento. The town has 4626 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012), who mainly work in agriculture. Main areas are wheat cultivation, cultivation of olives, almonds and grapes.

The neighboring municipalities are Agrigento, Mont Allegro and Monte Real.

History

At the time of Arab stood here the castle Qal'al - Sugul. The fort was destroyed in the late 11th century by the Normans and rebuilt again in 1310 on behalf of Baron Federico Chiaramonte. This year is occupied in a first document. The present town was built mainly in the 14th and 15th century, when the Catalan nobleman Corilles the privilege was granted the area to cultivate around the castle.

Population Development

Since the mid-19th century, the population increased steadily and a half times to 1961. Since then, however, the figures show a downward trend and are presently (as of end of 2010) already among the first known values.
