Satsuma (Kagoshima)

Satsuma (Japaneseさつま 町, -chō ) is a Japanese city in the same county Satsuma. It is located in Kagoshima Prefecture on the southernmost of Japan's main islands, Kyushu.

Restructuring

Since 2004, various restructuring measures will be taken in Kagoshima Prefecture. In March 2005, the places Miyanojo and Tsuruda together with about 22,000 inhabitants were slammed in this context Satsuma. The cities of Sendai, Hiwaki, Iriki, Kedoin and Togo, as well as some surrounding villages were merged into the new city Satsumasendai in 2004. The county Satsuma seems no longer provided after the restructuring, but this is not yet complete.

History

Before the abolition of the feudal system in the Meiji Restoration, Satsuma was the capital of the province of Satsuma and controlled by the Shimazu Satsuma Han. With the introduction of the modern prefecture system and the consequent inclusion in Kagoshima Satsuma then lost its meaning.

Middle of the 19th century, the mandarin citrus fruit similar Unshu Mikan from Satsuma was carried out in the USA and has since been known in western countries also Satsuma.
