Toshima (Kagoshima)

Toshima (Japanese十 岛村, -mura ) is a village which is located in the district of Kagoshima in Kagoshima Prefecture in Japan and includes the Tokara Islands.

The office is located in the city of Kagoshima outside the village. 1 March 2014, the village had an estimated population of 699 inhabitants and a population density of 6.9 persons per km ².

Toshima means " 10 islands " and goes back to the name of the predecessor church Jitto which was written the same but pronounced differently. With 10 islands inhabited islands Iojima, Kuroshima, Takeshima, Kuchinoshima, Nakanoshima, Gajajima, Tairajima, Suwanosejima, Akusekijima and Takarajima were meant. The whole area is 101.35 km ².

History

The present village is part of a previously existing from all 10 islands Jitto community.

After the Meiji Restoration, these islands were assigned to the district of the province of Satsuma Kawanabe, 1897 then the county Ōshima province Ōsumi.

Jitto was built as a church in 1908. 1946 came the southern seven of the 10 islands administered by the United States, the other three islands ( Iojima, Kuroshima and Takeshima ) formed their own congregation Mishima ( " three islands "). In 1952 came the seven islands again under Japanese sovereignty, the community Mishima remained independent and to distinguish it from earlier Jitto the new municipality, although the spelling retained but with a different pronunciation Toshima chose. 1973 both communities were annexed to the county Kagoshima.
